Broadcaster SuperSport International Signs Renewal Deal With Cricket South Africa

Cricket South Africa confirmed a renewal deal with broadcast partner SuperSport Int'l that will see the channel remain on board as the pay TV rights holder for Sub-Saharan Africa for another six years. SuperSport will also remain the host broadcaster for all home int'l matches during this period. In addition, the broadcaster will play a key role in promoting domestic and franchise cricket with an undertaking to cover a minimum of 60% of the Ram Slam T20 Challenge and Momentum One-Day Cup matches (SuperSport). ESPN's Firdose Moonda wrote fans without access to the channel "should still be able to watch the South African team's home matches because SuperSport provides the state broadcaster, SABC, with a live feed." The same does not apply when South Africa plays abroad or to domestic matches, "which are only available to watch on SuperSport." Despite that, TV viewership of cricket in South Africa is growing according to Repucom. Viewing time of the average South African cricket fan "has increased by 21%" (ESPN, 4/15). SOWETAN LIVE's Telford Vice wrote fans "continue to cough up if they want to watch the team in action abroad." Despite the fact that the South African Broadcasting Corporation "reaches far more viewers than SuperSport" (SOWETAN LIVE, 4/16).
