Executive Transactions

Brasileiro Série C side Portuguesa announced Tuesday its newest manager and new exec director. LUIZ SIMPLÍCIO will be the club’s football manager and JOSÉ REIS the exec director. In addition to defining the coaching staff and the contracting of players, Simplício and Reis "will work to integrate the basis of professionalism, with the objective of revealing players within the club itself" (ESTADÃO, 4/14). ... Bundesliga club Hamburg SV has appointed BRUNO LABBADIA as head coach as it attempts to "escape relegation with just six games left to play." Labbadia has agreed to a 15-month contract after talks with former Mainz 05 coach THOMAS TUCHEL "broke down." He takes over from PETER KNAEBEL, who "returns to his post as sports director" (BBC, 4/15). ... Former Australia cricketer JASON GILLESPIE has been made the new coach of Big Bash League side Adelaide Strikers but will also "remain in charge at Yorkshire." Gillespie "agreed a two-year deal with the South Australian franchise starting in December," in the English offseason (BBC, 4/15).

WESTERN BULLDOGS HIRE NIKE EXEC: Australian Football League side Western Bulldogs ended their “three-month search” for a new CEO when they announced on Wednesday the appointment of senior Nike exec DAVID STEVENSON as SIMON GARLICK’s replacement. Stevenson will not, however, “assume his responsibilities until August as he relocates to Melbourne” from the U.S. He has been part of Nike management for the past 17 years, “ascending to the role of vice president of sales” for emerging markets. He has been based in Oregon, but “decided to return home to Melbourne to take up the position at the Whitten Oval.” He was selected by a “special sub-committee from a short-list of 12 applicants” (THE AGE, 4/15).
