Olympic Notes: Brazil Police Remove Squatters From Derelict 'Olympic Hotel'

Riot police removed squatters on Tuesday from a "derelict building in Rio de Janeiro that former Brazilian oil magnate Eike Batista had once planned to turn into a luxury hotel" for the 2016 Olympic Games. Live TV images showed police "using riot shields and pepper spray." Smoke could be seen rising from the large '50s building "located in Rio's affluent Flamengo area with views over Guanabara Bay" (REUTERS, 4/14). ... The French Olympic Committee (CNOSF)

revealed a new logo for the organization "as a Paris bid to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games edges closer." The CNOSF said the change was made for its need of "a new graphic identity, more meaningful, more dynamic and better suited to its ambitions" (ISPORTCONNECT, 4/15). ... The Qatar Olympic Committee announced the formation of an interim committee to oversee rugby and American football activities, "reaffirming Qatar’s commitment to nurturing and developing all sports." The committee will work to bolster the rugby and American football sporting activities in Qatar "by overseeing said activities, as well as preparing rules and regulations that will govern the relevant tournaments" (MARHABA, 4/14). ... Int'l Paralympic Committee Powerlifting has announced that all four days of competition from the 2015 IPC Powerlifting Americas Open Championships in Mexico City will be streamed live at www.Mexico-City-2015.com from April 26. The coverage is a part of a sport-wide aim to bring powerlifting to more people than ever before in '15, a year before the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games (IPC).
