The London Daily Mail's MARTIN SAMUEL "did the double" at the 2014 SJA British Sports Journalism Awards on Monday, picking up Columnist and Sports Writer of the Year. The Daily Mail was named Newspaper of the Year, while MATT LAWTON picked up Sports News Reporter of the Year and GRAHAM CHADWICK scooped Sports News Picture of the Year (DAILY MAIL, 3/23). Guardian Sport was named website of the year at the British Sports Journalists' Association awards, with judges praising its "digital innovation and great journalism" (London GUARDIAN, 3/24). ... DARYL GIBSON is expected to be appointed Super Rugby side NSW Waratahs head coach in the coming days after rival NICK SCRIVENER "withdrew from the race to take up an offer in Japan." Gibson is now dueling with Australian U20 coach ADRIAN THOMPSON to replace head coach MICHAEL CHEIKA, who will "concentrate solely on the Wallabies when the current Super Rugby season ends" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 3/24). ... Nearly nine years after Italy’s biggest football scandal, "the investigation has been closed with hardly any sentences given after charges were dropped against two former Juventus executives." LUCIANO MOGGI and ANTONIO GIRAUDO "will not face jail for match-fixing after their prison sentences were eliminated by Italy’s highest court, which ruled on Monday that the statute of limitations had expired." Moggi "avoids a 28-month jail term, while Giraudo escapes 20 months in prison" (AP, 3/24). ... Scottish Premiership side Celtic striker JOHN GUIDETTI has been charged by the Scottish FA with singing an allegedly "offensive" song about the demise of Old Firm rivals Rangers. The on-loan Man City player "has been issued with a notice of complaint after giving an interview to Dutch TV show FC Rijnmond." In it, "he repeats a chant sung about him by Celtic supporters" (SCOTSMAN, 3/23).
