League Notes: Spanish Basketball League Announces Provisional Suspensions

The Spanish Basketball League (ACB) has decided to provisionally suspend Bilbao Basket's Dejan Todorovic and Laboral Kutxa's Tornike Shengelia for their fight on Sunday. The ACB announced that the players "are provisionally suspended until a definitive decision is reached." The announcement "provoked anger from both clubs, which reacted with a joint statement." They pointed out that the closest precedent, a fight between Estudiantes and Real Madrid players during the '04-05 season, resulted in fines for three players (EL MUNDO, 3/5). ... The Rugby League players union "sought an urgent meeting" with the National Rugby League "to discuss the future of the Gold Coast Titans players at the centre of the cocaine scandal." On the same day Gold Coast players Beau Falloon and Jamie Dowling had their cases adjourned until May 8, RLPA CEO David Garnsey said that "the meeting would allow the lawyers representing the players to put forward the case for their clients’ return." Garnsey: "Players are entitled to the presumption of innocence and to defend their reputations" (NEWS LIMITED, 3/6). ... Dutch F1 driver Giedo van der Garde "has launched urgent legal action at Victorian Supreme Court claiming he has been unfairly dismissed by the Sauber racing team." Van der Garde "wants the court to force Sauber" to give one of its two starting drives in the upcoming grand prix at Albert Park. Van der Garde "claims he was guaranteed a spot on this year's Sauber team on June 28, 2014, but team bosses reneged on the deal just months ago" (HERALD SUN, 3/5).
