Royal St. George's Votes To Allow Women Members For First Time In History

The end of male-only Open Championship venues is in sight after Royal St. George’s "voted to allow women members for the first time in its history," according to Neil Gardner of the LONDON TIMES. Muirfield and Royal Troon "are the other two courses on the Open rota to have male-only membership policies." Muirfield, which is owned and run by The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, is also reviewing its membership criteria with a report due to be completed this month, while Troon, which is hosting The Open next year, announced last month its intention to undertake a “comprehensive review” of its membership policy. Royal St. George’s is "based near Sandwich in Kent. The club said that more than 81% of the club’s full members "took part in a ballot" and 90% voted in favor of women being eligible for membership. The resolution to alter the club’s rules "was passed after a general meeting on February 14 and takes effect immediately." Royal St. George’s Club Secretary Tim Checketts said, "It is extremely good news going forward" (LONDON TIMES, 3/4). In London, Aliya Ram wrote Royal St. George’s "is one of southern England’s most recognised golf clubs, and provided the inspiration for a fictional match between James Bond and Goldfinger." Ian Fleming, Bond’s creator, "had been a member." Checketts said St. George’s was “delighted at the outcome” and “looking forward to having some junior ladies and lady members in the future” (FINANCIAL TIMES, 3/4).
