German Hockey League Sets New Regular-Season Attendance Record

The German Hockey League (DEL) set a new attendance record during the '14-15 regular season. A total of 2,336,670 spectators attended the 364 regular-season games. The number translated into an average attendance of 6,419. The league's previous record of 6,342 spectators per game was set in '14. The league's second outdoor Winter Game between Dusseldorf and Cologne on Jan. 10 contributed to the numbers with more than 50,000 in attendance. DEL CEO Gernot Tripcke: "It certainly is a very beautiful thing. We take the record, but we won't overestimate it. The consistent attendance is much more a sign for the huge potential that our sport has" (DEL).

MOVING ON: In Augsburg, Peter Deininger reported "the Deutschland Cup hockey tournament could move to Augsburg's Curt Frenzel Stadium" this fall, after German Hockey Federation (DEB) President Franz Reindl announced the event's departure from Munich. Reindl made the announcement on Wednesday. He said, "We want to revive the tournament in a new surrounding." The 6,200-seat Curt Frenzel Stadium, which was turned from an open-air arena into a closed stadium for more than €30M, could host the four-nation tournament for three years starting in the fall. DEB spokesperson Ronja Richter said, "We are in contract negotiations with interested cities" (AUGSBURGER ALLGEMEINE, 2/27).
