The NBA formally named CHRISTINE PANTOYA Senior VP/Mobile Strategy, a new position responsible for expanding the NBA's mobile strategy in the U.S. and abroad, including development of the league's over-the-top offerings. She will report to NBA Chief Strategic & Financial Officer JASON CAHILLY. She most recently worked for Verizon and also has held positions with Cox, Sprint, Nextel and others (NBA). Pantoya will "collaborate extensively with the NBA Digital joint venture between the league and Turner Sports" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 3/2 issue). ... New York-based Bruin Sports Capital has "again dipped into the talent
pool" of former IMG execs to hire former Senior VP/Consulting DAVID ABRUTYN as exec VP and principal. Abrutyn, who spent 15 years at IMG, "parted
with the company in July, months after IMG was acquired by WME." Abrutyn
represents Bruin Founder GEORGE PYNE's "second major hire since forming Bruin in January" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 3/2 issue). ... MP & Silva announced the appointment of SHERMAN TAN for the newly created role as head of strategic partnership and business development (Asia) starting this week. Sherman will be responsible for overseeing sponsorship projects across Asia and will be involved in the strategic partnership with the FA of Singapore in areas including commercial opportunities and event management. He will be based at MP & Silva’s Asia Pacific office in Singapore, and report directly to Managing Dir of Asia Pacific BEATRICE LEE (MP & Silva).
BCCI APPOINTMENTS: Veteran cricket administrator JAGMOHAN DALMIYA was on Monday "unanimously elected" president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India but the N. SRINIVASAN camp "suffered a huge setback" with the rival faction's ANURAG THAKUR beating SANJAY PATEL for the post of secretary at the BCCI's Annual General Meeting. Jharkhand Cricket Association's AMITABHA CHODHARY was elected the joint secretary, beating Goa's CHETAN DESAI, belonging to the anti-Srinivasan faction, while Haryana's ANIRUDH CHOUDHARY won the treasurer's position by defeating RAJIV SHUKLA (PTI, 3/2).
COACHES/MANAGERS: Argentine RICARDO GARECA has been "charged with guiding Peru through this
year's Copa America and the qualifying campaign for the 2018 World Cup
after he was named as the country's coach." Gareca has won Peruvian and Argentine domestic titles with Universitario de Deportes and Velez Sarsfield, respectively. News of his hire was first reported in February (REUTERS, 3/3). ... The Gibraltar FA announced that national team coach ALLEN BULA has been sacked following "a thorough and careful investigation, into internal matters." No details were given "on who will select the team for a European Championship qualifying match at Scotland at the end of March" (London GUARDIAN, 3/2).
