National Rugby League Turns Attention To Gold Coast Titans' Stadium Deal

The National Rugby League "has been behind the wheel at the Gold Coast Titans for only a few days," but it has already started discussions centered around the club's future at CBUS Stadium, according to Phil Lutton of the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD. After being declared insolvent and handing its license back to the game's governing body, "the arrangements at the Titans' home of Robina have come under the spotlight," with suggestions the club bleeds up to A$300,000 ($236,700) per game. There "would appear to be little choice for the Titans, however, given the only other major stadium in the region -- Suncorp Stadium -- is also overseen by Stadiums Queensland, the government arm that runs most major sporting venues in the state." Each stadium deal is different, but the basic structure "is modelled around a deal that sees clubs paying most of the costs for hosting events and then retaining the bulk of the match-day revenue." That "also includes the ability to leverage income from sponsorship and signage around the ground, on top of takings from the gate" (SMH, 2/25).
