League Notes: Russian Sports Minister Pledges Investigation Into Death Of Biathlete

Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said that the Russian sports ministry "is to lead an investigation into the death of a biathlete who collapsed and died during a race last weekend." Alina Yakimkina, 21, died during a Russia Cup biathlon race in Tyumen on Saturday in what Mutko described as a "huge tragedy." Yakimkina, competing for the Republic of Udmurtia, "suddenly fell to the ground 700 metres from the finish of the individual race." According to the autopsy, "acute heart failure was the cause of death" (REUTERS, 2/23). ... India's Supreme Court on Monday took objection to suspended Board of Control for Cricket in India President N. Srinivasan for participating in a board meeting held on February 8, reminding him that his position has become “vulnerable” after a verdict found him in “conflict of interest” in the Indian Premier League corruption probe. A bench of Justices T.S. Thakur and F.M.I. Kallifullah said, "We found clear conflict of interest in his case. Therefore, he can't go on or contest elections. Having said that, this makes him very vulnerable. He should not have participated in the meeting. We should not be seen running around him. The spirit of our judgment is he is found in conflict of interest. We are not happy with it" (DECCAN HERALD, 2/24).
