Spanish Football League Reports Record Profit Of €154M In '13-14 Financial Year

Spain's Superior Sports Council (CSD) said in a report that the Spanish Football League's (LFP) profit in the '13-14 financial year increased to €154M, marking "the highest one-season figure in league history and confirming profit for the second consecutive year," according to Juan Jiménez of AS. The increase in revenue, a jump of 9.4% from the '12-13 season, absorbs and overcomes a bump in spending (up 7.6%). This "had a lot to do with the success of Spanish clubs" -- Real, Atlético and Sevilla -- in European competition. The bonuses for the Champions League (Real) and Europa League (Sevilla) titles overcame the spending. During the '13-14 season, the LFP decreased its debt by €85M from the previous year, a 2.5% drop (AS, 2/17). Jiménez reported in a separate piece LFP clubs made a total of €842M on TV revenue in '13-14. La Liga clubs made €68M ($77.6M) more in '13-14 than in the previous year, while second division clubs made €34M ($39M) less than in '12-13. It is "not the jump expected for Spanish football, which expects more revenue (especially from int'l rights) when a law requiring the centralized sale of TV rights is introduced" (AS, 2/17).
