Football Notes: Russian Sports Minister Says Crimea Could Form UEFA-Approved League

Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said that "Crimea could set up its own league which would be legally compatible with UEFA." Mutko: "UEFA has suggested setting an independent Crimean structure, which would unite the existing football federations of Crimea and Sevastopol. It is likely that a Crimean football league will be set up, which will for the time be attached to UEFA. UEFA is ready to give it the necessary help" (REUTERS, 1/23). ... Serie A "was hit by yet another controversy on Sunday which left both teams calling for the introduction of goal-line technology." Palermo was denied a goal in its match at Sampdoria when Michel Morganella's shot "struck the underside of the bar and television replays showed that it crossed the line before bouncing out." Even Sampdoria coach Sinisa Mihajlovic "agreed that the goal should have been given." He said, "We have to be sincere, it was obvious (that it was a goal). We don't usually talk about referees, but one of the things that needs to be done is to adopt goal-line technology" (REUTERS, 1/25).
