Event Notes: Melbourne, Christchurch To Host Cricket World Cup Opening Events

Melbourne will host an Australian Opening Event for the Int'l Cricket Council Cricket World Cup 2015 on Feb. 12. Tournament co-host New Zealand will stage its Opening Event on the same evening in Christchurch. The Melbourne event will involve current and former World Cup players, cultural and musical performances and a fireworks display. The events in both cities will be televised globally by Star Sports and its licensees (ICC). ... Westpac Stadium will be National Rugby League side New Zealand Warriors' home away from home for the third consecutive year after confirmation that the Warriors will host St. George Illawarra in Wellington on Aug. 8. Warriors Managing Dir Jim Doyle said that while "other options were considered for the club's one out-of-Auckland home game, Westpac Stadium provided the most compelling case" (STUFF, 12/18). ... Munich "will yet again not host an Apline Ski World Cup event this winter." The World Cup parallel slalom at Munich's Olympic Park, which was scheduled for New Year's Day, "was canceled by the Int'l Ski Federation (FIS) on Thursday due to 'unusually' high temperatures" (KURIER, 12/18).
