Spanish Football Associations Seeking Collaboration To Create Concussion Protocol

After the "many criticisms it received during the World Cup, FIFA decided in September to create a protocol to treat possible concussions suffered by players during games," according to Darío Ojeda of EL CONFIDENCIAL. Nevertheless, the measures proposed by FIFA -- which still "have to be approved by its Exec Committee" -- seem "insufficient for two reasons: they are far from the regulations approved by other competitions and they are not being used in national competitions." In Spain, "at the moment," neither the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) nor the Spanish Football League (LFP) have established anything. Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE) Secretary General Jesús Díaz Peramos said, "Even FIFA itself admits there is a need to regulate proceedings for an adequate response. As of today, they have not communicated to us that there are clear directives." The AFE has pushed for "standardized" regulations to be applied in "all competitions," not just in int'l play. The AFE "supports the petitions made in recent months by FIFPro" (EL CONFIDENCIAL, 10/15).
