National Rugby League To Introduce Sideline Monitors To Help Doctors Monitor Concussions

The National Rugby League "will introduce sideline monitors to help club doctors monitor concussion during the finals series," according to Brent Read of THE AUSTRALIAN. The move "may come too late for Penrith," however, as the club finds itself under investigation over its handling of center Jamal Idris on Sunday. The NRL used sideline monitors during this year’s State of Origin series and its implementation during the finals series "could be a precursor" to it being introduced permanently for club games next season. NRL Head of Football Todd Greenberg said, "It provides an opportunity for them to sit on the sideline with a screen that will allow the doctor to be able to review footage straight away. The doctor will be able to watch a replay of the incident. He will be able to freeze-frame it and look at how the player got hurt" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 9/9). In Sydney, Read & Honeysett wrote Greenberg "foreshadowed greater deterrents" for wrestling offenses next season and revealed a "comprehensive review of the interchange system was being conducted with a view to reducing the number" to eight in '16. Greenberg said that "the NRL was ready to consider more serious sanctions for players who cross the line." Penalties "were increased for crusher and cannonball tackles this season" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 9/9).
