Swiss Athletics To Financially Contribute Toward European Athletics Championships

Swiss Athletics "will have to financially contribute toward the recently completed European Athletics Championships," according to Andreas Kopp of the NEUE ZÜRCHER ZEITUNG. The organizers of the championships, which took place in Zürich, calculate with a financial loss of 2M Swiss francs ($2.2M). The finance gap "will be closed by private and public institutions, which each will contribute 50%." On the private side, the major contributors "will be the European Athletics Association, Weltklasse Zürich and Swiss Athletics." However, the Swiss athletics federation "is not swimming in money." The Swiss Sports Ministry has decided to cut its annual payment of 600,000 Swiss francs ($656,000) to the organization starting in '15. Despite its depleted resources, Swiss Athletics' contribution toward the championships "will not threaten the economic viability of the federation." Swiss Athletics Dir David Grolimund said, "The contribution won't put the federation in financial trouble and doesn't impact its vision for the future" (NZZ, 8/27).
