Berlin Sports Senator Says 2024 Olympics Bid To Cost City An Estimated $66M

A bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics would cost Berlin around €50M ($66.4M), according to the DPA. For the first time, Berlin Sports Senator Frank Henkel "provided concrete numbers." The amount would cover the period between '15 and fall '17. It would include costs for promotional events, planing, evaluations, public relations, staff, office space, computers, support for delegations, meetings and travel expenses. Left party member Gabriele Hiller said, "Considering the high need for renovations in the areas of school restrooms and easy accessible sport and swim facilities, it would be ill-advised to spend this amount of money for an Olympics bid." She added that taxpayer money should be for Berlin and not for the IOC. Henkel estimated that Olympic Games would have a price tag of about €2B ($2.7M) for Berlin. Critics of a Berlin Olympics bid estimate that this number would at least double because of the IOC's high requirements (DPA, 8/20).
