National Government Announces Investigation Into Argentine Basketball Confederation

Argentina's government announced that it "will intervene for sixth months" in the Argentine Basketball Confederation (CABB) due to the "body's delicate economic and institutional situation," according to TELAM. The Argentine government designated Federico Susbielles, a former basketball player and current manager within Argentina's Comprehensive Medical Attention Program (PAMI), as the auditor of the CABB. The intervention "will last for a period of 180 days, during which Susbielles will have the responsibility of regulating the institution, shaping the social structures and investigating accusations of fraud" (TELAM, 8/6). DYN reported Argentina National Sports Secretary Carlos Espínola said that there "was no other path besides intervention" and added that former CABB President Germán Vaccaro "will have to respond regarding matters that demand a lot of attention." Espínola said, "It was a process by all the corresponding rules and due to claims and demands made by the players. Because of this matter, there was no other path." A statement from the Argentine government claimed that "Vaccaro's tenure was marked by irregularities and arbitrary management" (DYN, 8/6).
