Liberian Football Association Suspends Matches In Effort To Halt Spread Of Ebola

Liberia "has suspended all football activities in an effort to control the spread of the deadly Ebola virus," according to the BBC. The Liberian FA said that there "was a risk of infection because football is a contact sport." New UN figures reveal the number of people killed by the virus in West Africa "has now reached 672." Former Liberia football player George Weah "joined the campaign to create greater awareness." Weah: "If one person gets affected, 100 persons will get affected, if 100 persons get affected, one million people will get affected." Liberian FA President Musa Hassan Bility said that "all football activity" had been indefinitely suspended to "protect players and fans." Bility: "It also has to do with the fans because whenever there is a game, a lot of people come together and we want to discourage gathering at this point." Bility said that the association had written to FIFA asking it "to call off two visits to Liberia planned for August and September." Bility: "We've asked FIFA to suspend both because we do not want the life of the FIFA president to be exposed to this disease" (BBC, 7/29).
