National Rugby League Side Brisbane Broncos' Salary Cap Case Lacks Concrete Evidence

Amid "an apparent lack of concrete evidence," the National Rugby League's investigation into the Brisbane Broncos for potential breaches of the salary cap "is likely to hang on whether the game believes a violation has occurred on the balance of probabilities," according to Brent Read of THE AUSTRALIAN. The investigation into allegations of irregularities "is continuing." A decision on whether the Broncos face any sanctions "is not considered imminent." It is believed that former Brisbane Football Operations Manager Andrew Gee, who was in charge of the club's retention and recruitment until stepping down last month, "has not been involved in the investigation." The lack of tangible evidence of salary cap breaches also comes despite the Broncos' majority owner, News Corp. Australia, "bringing auditing company Deloitte in to complete a forensic examination of the club's books" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 7/15).
