Serie A Inter Milan Retires Former Player Javier Zanetti's No. 4, Names Him VP

Serie A Inter Milan Owner Erick Thohir announced that former Inter player Javier Zanetti has been named the club's VP, according to Terry Daley of REUTERS. Thohir: "Zanetti will be the new vice president of the club, and has signed a two-year contract. The entire board has also agreed to retire his No. 4 jersey." Thohir "also announced that he would be offering" coach Walter Mazzarri a "one-year contract extension that will keep him at the club" until '16. Inter finished this year fifth in Serie A after a campaign that saw "frequent protests from fans at Mazzarri's management and the running of the club" by Thohir, the Indonesian businessman who "succeeded long-time owner" Massimo Moratti as club president in November (REUTERS, 6/30).
