NRL Head Of Football Says League Will Suspend Players Found Guilty Of Gambling

National Rugby League Head of Football Todd Greenberg "has indicated the game's governing body may name and shame any players and officials found guilty of betting on matches," according to Brent Read of THE AUSTRALIAN. Speaking in the "wake of revelations" that several players were "facing sanctions after being caught betting on games, Greenberg also said the NRL would have no qualms about dishing out suspensions if it felt they were necessary." The NRL's integrity unit is in the "throes of finalising a two-month investigation into the gambling habits of players and officials, which is understood to have caught out at least seven players and more than a dozen officials." The identity of the players involved will "carry the most interest." The NRL released a statement on Saturday "confirming up to seven players faced penalties for breaching the code of conduct." Greenberg, however, "spoke expansively on Sydney radio" on Sunday as he discussed the ongoing investigation. He "denied the NRL was downplaying the revelations and insisted they would suspend players if necessary" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 6/30).
