Wimbledon Ticket Sales Down, Blame Placed On Interest In FIFA World Cup

As the 2014 Wimbledon Championships is underway, the world’s oldest tennis tournament "has been overshadowed by the 2014 FIFA World Cup," according to Jesse Lawrence of FORBES. The heavy interest for the football tournament around the world, and in England, "has led to a decrease in demand for Wimbledon tickets this year." Michael Bernstein of Tennistours.com said that Wimbledon demand "is down 20% from last year, most of which he attributes to World Cup interest." It "would not be surprising to see demand shift back to tennis after England’s shocking early exit" from the World Cup. The U.S. Open "currently has an average price of $228.21 for an all sessions pass while the average price by purchasing all individual sessions separately is $377.33," according to TipIQ (FORBES, 6/24).
