Hypothetical Distribution Of Premier League TV Money Based On Audience Examined

Liverpool and ManU would have both received more than £70M ($117M) extra in Premier League TV money "had the cash been distributed based on audience," according to Nick Harris of the London DAILY MAIL. Liverpool collected £97.5M ($163M) in TV money last season, the most in the Premier League. However, they would have been in line for £172.3M ($288M) "if the distribution was based on the number of TV viewers" -- a difference of £74.8M ($125M). ManU would have received £159.5M ($266.6M) if the Premier League "split their money more evenly based on UK audience." As it was, ManU picked up £89.1M ($149M), more than £70M ($117M) less. The Premier League TV money distribution "is among the most balanced in the world" with every club receiving a £52.2M ($87.2M) basic payment with the rest of the £1.56B ($2.6B) pot "being shared based on final league position and TV appearances" (DAILY MAIL, 5/28).
