Spanish Broadcaster RTVE Paying $53M For Spain's Euro 2016, 2018 World Cup Qualifiers

Spanish public broadcaster RTVE President Leopoldo González-Echenique confirmed that RTVE will pay €39M ($53.1M) over four years for broadcast rights for the Spanish national team's Euro 2016 and 2018 World Cup qualifiers, according to the EFE. RTVE's agreement with UEFA includes the broadcast rights for 20 qualifiers, 10 for Euro 2016 and 10 more World Cup qualifiers. Echenique said that the rights include web, mobile and radio. He also explained that the cost of the network's coverage of Saturday's Champions League final in Lisbon was €218,000 ($297,000), "a 'marginal' cost when compared" to the €204,000 ($278,000) that it costs to "buy an American movie" and considering the "usefulness the broadcast offered to Spanish people and the rest of the world" (EFE, 5/27).
