England & Wales Cricket Board To Charge Two Players With Match-Fixing

The England & Wales Cricket Board "is to charge two players with fixing the result of a county match," according to Stephen Brenkley of the London INDEPENDENT. It will bring several accounts against Lou Vincent and Naved Arif, "who played for Sussex in a 40-over match against Kent" at Hove in Aug. '11. Sussex "lost the match by 14 runs." It is the first time in England that "the result of a match is said to have been fixed and both players would face lifetime bans from sports if found guilty." Vincent is likely to face at least 10 charges and Arif, "who helped him in the fix, around five" (INDEPENDENT, 5/22). The AFP reported New Zealand cricketer Brendon McCullum on Thursday said that "he had no regrets about his leaked evidence to a corruption probe." McCullum said that "he stood by his testimony" and maintained confidence in the governing body and would continue to cooperate. McCullum: "There’s still a long way to go I think" (AFP, 5/22). The PTI reported interim Board of Control for Cricket in India and Indian Premier League President Sunil Gavaskar on Thursday admitted that "two cricketers were approached by the bookies and the matter has been reported to the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit officials." Asked if players have been approached during this year's IPL, Gavaskar replied, "There have been a couple and it's been reported to ACU. They are looking into it" (PTI, 5/22).
