Spain's Superior Sports Council To Intervene In Finances Of 11 Sports Federations

Spain's Superior Sports Council (CSD) will "intervene in the financial accounts of a total of 11 federations," according to José Félix Díaz of EL CONFIDENCIAL. Included are the Spanish national federations of "aeronautics, athletics, bowling, boxing, fencing, rowing, rugby, taekwondo, Olympic shooting, triathlon, and sailing." The CSD stated in a letter signed by CSD President Miguel Cardenal that "it will decrease its intervention if the federations can justify their deviations from their budgets" (EL CONFIDENCIAL, 5/13).

SWIMMING INITIATIVE: In Madrid, Juanma Leiva reported in Spain, 600,000 children "learn aquatic sports every year" and the Spanish Swimming Federation (RFEN) has presented the "Swimming is life" project: a plan to "structure these lessons in a strong and healthy manner," while also promoting the "practice of swimming." This "ambitious project hopes to reach 200,000 kids in four years." Spanish Olympic swimmer Mireia Belmonte, who attended a presentation of the project, said, "Motivation is key. As much for kids starting to swim as for elite swimmers" (AS, 5/13).

SAILING FEDERATION FACES INTERVENTION: In Barcelona, Jaume Soler reported the Spanish Sailing Federation (RFEV), which has more Olympic medals than any other Spanish federation, with 19, is "on the verge of CSD intervention." The RFEV is one of "the most indebted Spanish federations" (MUNDO DEPORTIVO, 5/13). Through RFEV President José Ángel Rodríguez, the federation denied media reports of CSD intervention (RFEV).
