Ex-Leeds Chief Claims CCTV Installed At Elland Road Boardroom To Catch Drugs Use

League Championships side Leeds United former Managing Dir David Haigh "has claimed that cameras were installed in the boardroom at Elland Road because he received information that alleged misuse of class-A drugs was taking place on the premises," according to James Riach of the London GUARDIAN. Haigh, who resigned from the club last month following the protracted takeover of Italian businessman Massimo Cellino, "released a statement on Thursday, shortly after being interviewed by West Yorkshire Police over claims thousands of pounds in club money were fraudulently used to pay for cameras at the stadium." This "was a claim Cellino made following his takeover." However, Haigh claimed the surveillance equipment was "properly paid for by the club" and that it was installed because of alleged "recent misuse of class-A drugs" (GUARDIAN, 5/8). SKY SPORTS reported the presence of the cameras themselves in the boardroom and toilets "was not enough to prompt a criminal probe, but allegations they were purchased as a result of a misappropriation of club funds were." Haigh resigned from his position "citing comments made by Cellino as a key reason." Cellino "was heavily critical of Haigh in a conversation with a supporter which he did not know was being recorded," while also saying that he "intended to sack him." Haigh "had been set to become Leeds' chief executive under Cellino" (SKY SPORTS, 5/8).
