The Argentine FA's Exec Committee on Tuesday approved the organization of a "new structure in the top division, with the Primera A expanded to include 30 teams," according to the BUENOS AIRES HERALD. The AFA's "new baby" has long been a "dream" of AFA President Julio Grondona. The new format, "which would bring an end to the current short championships," will begin in February and, although "differences around the money distributed by the governmental Fútbol Para Todos television program still persist, most of the project has been passed." As the agreement "currently stands, the 17 Primera teams who stay up this season will be assured a place in the new tournament," and will be joined by three more teams that "gain promotion from the Nacional B second-tier championship." The "remaining 10 places will be decided through two tournaments of 11 teams each, from which the top five teams will join the top-flight." Qualification for the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana continental tournaments "remains to be decided, while the average points relegation system will stay, with two teams a year facing relegation" (BUENOS AIRES HERALD, 4/29).
