German Public Broadcaster ARD Will Not Renew Contract With Boxing Promoter Sauerland

German public broadcaster ARD announced on Monday that it "will not extend its contract with boxing team Sauerland past '14," according to the SID. However, boxing promoter and Team Sauerland Owner Wilfried Sauerland hopes that the broadcaster "will eventually come around." Sauerland said, "We expected that the contract won't be extended in its current form. In its reasoning, ARD said that it's about money. We are open to talks in that area. I think that we will continue the negotiations in the summer." Sauerland reportedly received around €12M-€15M ($17M-$21M) annually from ARD. In return, Sauerland "was required to put on at least 10 events per year." Should the two parties fail to reach an agreement, Sauerland "made clear that he wants to continue his work -- even if that means with a different TV channel" (SID, 4/29).
