Brazilian Football League's Market Value Falls 28% Due To Exodus Of Neymar, Other Stars

Brazil's Pluri Consulting reported in a study that the "exodus of top Brazilian footballers to Europe" caused a 28% decrease in the market value of the top division of Brazilian football, according to the EFE. The combined market value of the top 20 Brazilian clubs fell from €935M in '13 to €672M ($929.2M) this year. The Brazilian league was ranked the eighth-most valuable football league in the world a year ago and is now ranked 10th in terms of market value. It was No. 6 in '12. Pluri "calculates the value of footballers based on 61 specific criteria." The top two leagues on this list are the EPL -- with a market value of €3.6B ($5B) -- and La Liga, with a total value of €2.6B ($3.6B). Pluri's study said, "The 28% depreciation of the Brazilian Championship was the biggest among the leagues that were evaluated and reflected the large number of players who left the country, including Neymar, Bernard [Shakhtar Donetsk] and Paulinho [Tottenham]" (EFE, 4/23).
