La Liga side Valencia earned €800,000 ($1.1B) by letting "Real Madrid and Barcelona use its Mestalla stadium for last week's Copa del Rey final," but insurance will not cover "damages done to the stadium after the match" that could cost an estimated €30,000 ($41,400). The Spanish Football Federation's insurance for these cases "does not cover 100% of the damages caused by fans who broke seats and caused damages to billboards and bathrooms," so it is likely Valencia will have to cover part of these costs and make the repairs quickly, "as the club will host Atlético Madrid on Sunday" (SUPERDEPORTE, 4/20). ... Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu "addressed his club's situation and ruled out holding elections, while identifying Lionel Messi as a leader of the club in the future." Bartomeu: "There will be a profound remodeling, not a revolution. [Sporting Dir Andoni] Zubizarreta is leading this remodeling. The roster is young, I do not believe a question of age needs a profound renovation. ... There will not be resignations or elections. We have two years ahead that are full of excitement." Bartomeu added that he will "speak with Barcelona coach Tata Martino after the season" (EL PERIODICO, 4/19). ... Second division Brazilian side Portuguesa abandoned its match against Joinville "in the 16th minute on Friday, saying it had a court order allowing it to play in the top flight that begins on Saturday." Portuguesa players "left the field" with the score tied 0-0 after a "court official showed up during its match and presented the ruling to team officials and referees" (AP, 4/18). ... Dutch FA Dir Bert van Oostveen said that Ajax Amsterdam fans who "threw fireworks on to the pitch which led to Sunday's Dutch Cup final against PEC Zwolle to be halted twice will be punished" (REUTERS, 4/21).
