Former FIFA Exec Jérôme Champagne Calls For Better Representation For South America

Former senior FIFA exec Jérôme Champagne said that "South American football federations should have better representation within FIFA," according to Dino Cappelli of MARCA. Champagne: "Globalization brought us a lot of problems with the increase of inequality within continents and national leagues. We have a complex situation of deregulation and human activity. ... We have to think about a strong FIFA to correct the inequality. In the last 20 years, the federations have taken all the power. FIFA should protect the fundamental principle of one country, one vote; one federation, one vote." Champagne described his perceptions when he joined FIFA in '98, "when many federations did not have headquarters." He added, "You have to take the positives but we should think about the new challenge of inequality, ending the dominance of the 15 rich European clubs. There are things that are not legal that were in the past." Champagne said that "South America in particular should have a bigger role within FIFA." He said, "I am convinced that the South American federations should have a stronger role. It is a provider of footballers. It grabs my attention that in Europe, goals from South America are not shown. ... Globalization is wrong if it benefits only the most powerful leagues" (MARCA, 4/20).
