UEFA General Secretary Says It Wants Champions League Action Available On Free-TV

UEFA General Secretary Gianni Infantino assured that "UEFA supports Champions League (and Europa League) games being shown on free-TV, and believes that there should always be a local game that fans do not have to pay to watch," according to Francesc Aguilar of MUNDO DEPORTIVO. In cases "like Spanish football, where there are up to four teams that qualified, the idea is that a matchday can include one or two free matches." This decision is "definitive and obeys the wishes" of UEFA President Michel Platini. Infantino said of Spain's situation, "UEFA cannot interfere in national matters, but personally, I believe that it would be a mistake to stop offering La Liga games on free-TV once a week." Regarding the European Championships, Infantino said, "We will keep fighting so that various fan bases can enjoy the games of their respective national teams on free-TV because it is very important for international and national football. I know that we would earn a lot more money if we did not do this, as many would pay fortunes to see their national teams on pay-TV, but this is our philosophy" (MUNDO DEPORTIVO, 3/26).
