Indian Cricket Captain Files $16M Lawsuit Against Zee TV For Defamation
India cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni "has sued" private TV network Zee TV "for defamation," according to the BBC. Dhoni filed a case in the Madras High Court demanding 1B rupees ($16.4M) in damages from the channel. He said that Zee TV "has been showing false reports suggesting his involvement in betting and match fixing." The court "barred the channel from broadcasting any reports on the 32-year-old for the next two weeks" (BBC, 3/18). In India, R. Sivaraman reported Dhoni claimed that "he was aggrieved by highly defamatory scandalous, libellous and malicious false reports and statements" being made by Zee Media Corp., News Nation Network and suspended Indian Police Service officer G. Sampath Kumar "acting in concert with each other" (THE HINDU, 3/18).
