Super League Rugby Club Castleford Tigers Confirms Plans For New Stadium

Super League rugby club Castleford has secured a move to a new stadium by '17, according to Andy Wilson of the London GUARDIAN. The Tigers "are joint top of the early-season table" and "have now released plans to leave their Wheldon Road home for a new development in nearby Glasshoughton." Castleford has "been talking of a move for more than a decade." But this proposal "is unrelated to the one that stalled several years ago over issues surrounding the sale of Wheldon Road" (GUARDIAN, 3/12). SKY SPORTS reported Castleford wants to build a 10,000-capacity stadium as part of a £135M ($225M) retail development of a site at Glasshoughton. Lateral Property Group said that the development "will also feature a 50-acre country park and that as many as 2,000 jobs would be created." The purpose-built stadium "would be designed to meet Super League requirements," with a mixture of both seating and standing terraces, and it is hoped that work will begin during '15 (SKY SPORTS, 3/13). The BBC reported Tigers Chair Jack Fulton said it was an "exciting opportunity" to get a home "fit for the 21st Century." LPG Managing Dir Philip Lunn said details of a public consultation would be announced "shortly" (BBC, 3/13). Lunn: “In addition to delivering this new stadium for Castleford Tigers, the enabling retail development could bring a massive boost to the local economy. We have had very positive conversations with some of the biggest names in U.K. retail and we expect to be able to make further announcements soon" (YORKSHIRE EVENING POST, 3/13).
