Football Notes: Bayern Munich Facing UEFA Punishment Over Homophobic Banner

Bayern Munich is facing a "hefty double fine" following its Champions League win over Arsenal "after their fans unfurled a homophobic banner before Tuesday night's last-16 second leg at the Allianz Arena." UEFA is "set to open disciplinary proceedings" against the European champions over the small banner, "which featured the words 'Gay Gunners' and an animation of Mesut Ozil in front of the visitors' signature cannon" (London TELEGRAPH, 3/12). ... R-SPORT reported 38 people "have been detained on charges of misbehavior at a sports event," the Russian Interior Ministry announced Wednesday, in the first application of a new law introduced by President Vladimir Putin. The arrests were made across the country at last weekend's eight Russian Premier League football matches, "half of them at the Moscow derby pitting Dynamo against CSKA in the capital" (R-SPORT, 3/12). ... The South Korean FA said that it will provide about 200M won ($187,775) in humanitarian aid to the South Sudan FA. The KFA "will donate football gear, including training jerseys, uniforms and footballs, to the young country that is still suffering from a recent civil war" (JOONGANG DAILY, 3/13). ... UNAIDS (the joint United Nations program on HIV) "has joined forces" with the Asian Development Bank and the Asian Football Confederation to launch an HIV-prevention program "aimed at helping tackle the risk of HIV transmission amongst young people in Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, the Philippines and Cambodia" (PHNOM PENH POST, 3/12).
