Football Notes: Bundesliga Club Borussia Dortmund Reaches 100,000 Members Mark

Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund "has become the third German club after Bayern Munich and FC Schalke to reach the 100,000 members mark." The club currently has 100,254 members. In '89, the club's membership number stood at 1,800 (SID, 2/28). ... The FA of Malaysia’s "Love Football, Stop Hooliganism" campaign "is not working at all." Officials at the FAM "were left red-faced on Saturday when ultras unleashed flares and smoke bombs" during Malaysia’s friendly int'l against the Philippines at the Selayang Stadium (THE STAR, 3/2). ... Man City Manager Manuel Pellegrini "has been given an immediate two-match touchline ban" by UEFA for criticizing the referee after his side's Champions League match against Barcelona (BBC, 2/28). ... FA Chair Greg Dyke said that the governing body "had not ruled out an appeal" against the leniency of EPL side West Brom striker Nicolas Anelka’s five-match ban for his "quenelle" gesture. FA officials will on Monday "get to see for the first time the reasons given by the independent regulatory commission for sanctioning Anelka" (London INDEPENDENT, 3/2). ... Spain's last game before the World Cup "will be against El Salvador." Spain "will play the Central American nation" in Washington, D.C. on June 7 before traveling to Brazil (FOOTBALL ESPANA, 2/1). ... Serie A players are "wearing rainbow-colored shoelaces this weekend in an expanding anti-homophobia demonstration." Cagliari midfielder Daniele Dessena "received online attacks after wearing the laces last weekend and as a result three teammates -- South Americans Fernando Avelar, Victor Ibarbo and Mauricio Pinilla -- joined him in wearing the multi-colored shoe strings for Sunday's 3-0 win over Udinese." On Saturday, Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan, a "former teammate of Dessena's at Cagliari, wore the rainbow laces during a 0-0 draw with Inter Milan" (AP, 3/2).
