Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority Announces Conclusion To AFL, NRL Probe

Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority CEO Aurora Andruska said during a Senate hearing on Wednesday that the body "has completed its investigation" of the Australian Football League and the National Rugby League, according to Dan Harrison of the BRISBANE TIMES. Outgoing Andruska said that the "authority was now reviewing the evidence it had gathered and developing briefs" and added that former Federal Court judge Garry Downes "would review the evidence to determine whether it was sufficient to take cases forward" (BRISBANE TIMES, 2/26). In Sydney, Proszenko, Harrison & Lane reported ASADA "completed its investigation" without speaking to sports scientist Stephen Dank, "the central figure in the drama at Essendon and Cronulla." Dank, the "controversial figure who oversaw the supplements programs" at the Bombers in '12 and Cronulla the previous year, said that he "had not been contacted by ASADA officials" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 2/27). In Melbourne, Hudson & Warner reported Andruska said that players ultimately issued with a "show cause" letter would have "10 days to make a submission, unless they requested longer." Andruska added that the Anti-Doping Rules Violation Panel "would consider all the material and make a decision about whether they believed there had been a violation." The panel "would make a recommendation to the AFL if it found that infraction notices should be issued." The panel can "recommend a penalty, although that would ultimately be decided by an AFL tribunal" (HERALD SUN, 2/26).
