More Than Half Of Brazilian Survey Participants Express Opposition To Hosting World Cup

A survey released Tuesday indicated "little more than half of Brazilians would oppose bidding to host the World Cup if they were asked at this moment," according to the EFE. In a poll conducted by MDA, "when asked if they would support a World Cup bid today," 50.7% said no, 19.7% said they would "partially support the idea" and just 26.1% of those surveyed "said that they would support the project unconditionally." The percentages "contrast with the majority support that Brazil had when it was elected as World Cup host in '07." The numbers "also reflect the dissatisfaction of the many Brazilians promising to protest during the World Cup." Of those surveyed, "75.8% said that the Brazilian government's investments for the event were excessive, while 13.3% considered them adequate and 7.3% believed the investments were insufficient" (EFE, 2/18).
