Spanish Football League Looking To Charge Broadcasters For Highlights Rights

The Spanish Football League (LFP) "wants to charge broadcasters" such as Mediaset for airing match highlights in a "push to increase revenue for Real Madrid, Barcelona and other teams," according to Alex Duff of BLOOMBERG. LFP President Javier Tebas said in an email that the LFP is negotiating with the Spanish government to "change legislation that allows television companies to show all league goals for free." Tebas added that the value of the rights is as much as €40M ($54.8M) per year. Other TV companies that air highlights include Atresmedia. Catherine Davies of London-based consultancy Sportcal said that the league is "pushing for revenue to try to make sure Real Madrid and Barcelona don't suffer from a freeze in the television income that helps make them the world's richest clubs by sales." Davies said that the LFP "aims to boost total television rights income" from €752M ($1.03B) to €1B ($1.4B) by '17. Davies added that the league is "also seeking to combat illegal streaming of matches, remove a weekly game from free-to-air television, and increase sales from foreign broadcasters in Asia and South America" (BLOOMBERG, 2/18). LIBERTAD DIGITAL reported Tebas said, "We want to remove the cameras from the field and leave only those from Prisa or Mediapro -- the broadcasters that have rights -- so that the league can distribute exclusive rights or sell them to five channels. Not like now, with any TV station being able to air three minutes of La Liga on its shows." Tebas "wants to copy the model in other leagues where broadcasters pay for season season-long highlights rights" (LIBERTAD DIGITAL, 2/18).
