CSKA Moscow Punished Again For Racist Abuse; AS Roma Stadium Ban Extended

Russian Premier League side CSKA Moscow will have to play its next European home match behind closed doors "after repeated racist behaviour" by its supporters, according to the BBC. In November, the club had part of its ground shut after Man City midfielder Yaya Toure "was subjected to racist chants during a game in October." However, fans produced "multiple racist and far-right symbols" in December's Champions League tie at Viktoria Plzen. CSKA has also "been fined" €50,000 ($69,000). Russia will be hosting the World Cup in '18, "and Toure has suggested black players may boycott the competition" (BBC, 2/18).

ITALIAN ISSUES: REUTERS' Brian Homewood reported Serie A side AS Roma "will have to close an additional section of the Stadio Olimpico" for its next home game because of more anti-Naples chanting by its supporters. Roma was ordered to close both the Curva Sud and Curva Nord sections behind the goals for two home games because of anti-Naples chanting in a cup match against Napoli," a sanction which began at home to Sampdoria last Sunday." However, Italy's sporting tribunal said that fans in the so-called "Distinti Sud," a more expensive section of seating adjacent to the Curva Sud, themselves "took part in anti-Naples chanting during Sunday's game" (REUTERS, 2/18).
