Olympic Notes: Fury Over Ahn's 'Russian' Gold Aimed At Korean Skating Union

The Olympic victory of a South Korean speed skater competing for Russia "has triggered outrage in South Korea, where the government announced an inquiry into the national skating body on Monday." The website of the Korean Skating Union crashed on Sunday "under the volume of furious messages blaming its officials for the 'defection' of Ahn Hyun-soo to the Russian team" (SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST, 2/17). ... A transgender former member of Italy's parliament said on Monday that "she had been detained by Russian police for about three hours for trying to stage a gay rights protest at the Winter Olympics." Vladimir Luxuria said that she "was led away by two men in plain clothes on Sunday" when she held up a sign saying "Gay is OK" in Russian in the Olympic Park in Sochi, and was released in the early hours of Monday (REUTERS, 2/17). ... Activists said that Russian police "have detained a community leader of the Circassian ethnic group, which is native to the Sochi region and has protested Russia's holding of the Olympics on their ancestors' land." The Adyge Khase community group said Monday that leader Asker Sokht "was held Friday near the city of Maikop under unclear circumstances" (AP, 2/17). ... The Jamaican bobsled team has its own movie. Samsung created the "Keep on Pushing" trailer and movie featuring the '14 team (Fleishman).
