Sponsors Study Leaving Leeds United After 'Controversial Sacking' Of Manager

Two main sponsors of League Championship side Leeds United are considering "severing their ties with the embattled" club after the "controversial sacking" of Manager Brian McDermott, according to James Ducker of the LONDON TIMES. Several execs have also departed. Managing Dir Davied Haigh and acting CEO Paul Hunt quit "in protest at the dismissal of McDermott." The moves have left potential new Owner Massimo Cellino "squarely on a collision course with outraged supporters." Cellino could agree Monday on a deal to acquire a majority stake in the club. Leed's shirt sponsor Enterprise Insurance "was understood to be taking legal advice" about withdrawing its sponsorship and recovering the money it has invested in the club. The company "believes that the decision has brought the club into disrepute." Yorkshire-based theme park Flamingo Land, which sponsors the Leeds academy, was reported Sunday night to be" considering withdrawing its backing" (LONDON TIMES, 2/17).
