League One Side Bristol City Plans To Install Rail Seats At Ashton Gate

League One side Bristol City plans to become the first club in the U.K to install rail seats, "which have been pioneered in the German Bundesliga," according to the BBC. The seats "can either be unlocked or locked to create a standing or seated area inside a stadium." Regulations currently prohibit their use in football, "so they will initially be used for rugby games at Ashton Gate." The Football League has agreed to lobby the Government in a bid to permit "safe standing" areas in the game. Some Football League clubs have backed calls for the introduction of standing areas and campaigners believe that rail seats "provide a safer alternative to 'old-style' terraces, which did little to stop the forward movement of fans" (BBC, 2/12).
