German Basketball Federation Withdraws Wild Card Application For 2014 World Cup

The German Basketball Federation (DBB) "has withdrawn its application for a wild card for the 2014 World Cup in Spain," according to the SID. The DBB said that the reasons for this "surprising decision" were the "financial conditions" imposed by FIBA. The governing body asked for a financial "donation" as part of the application process for one of the four World Cup wild cards. DBB President Ingo Weiss said, "The newly made public procedure is unacceptable for the DBB. We won't submit any offers. We withdraw from the process." However, FIBA does not see any problems in regards to its wild-card procedure. FIBA Treasurer Manfred Ströher said, "It's a normal business matter. There are available spots. You didn't qualify athletically, now you can buy your way in" (SID, 1/28).
