Gambler Arrested Courtside Provided Information To British Betting Agency

The first person arrested in Australia for tennis courtside gambling "was one of six people who travelled the world attending sporting events and providing information to a British betting agency," according to Mark Russell of THE AGE. Daniel Dobson, 22, who was arrested at the Australian Open on Jan. 16 with an electronic transmitting device stitched into his shorts, "had hoped the charge against him of engaging in conduct that would corrupt a betting outcome was going to be dropped when he appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday." But prosecutor Luke Exell said that "the matter would proceed and that police wanted Mr. Dobson to provide a surety before being allowed to return to the United Kingdom until his case was heard on March 6." Watching games live, rather than via a slightly delayed TV broadcast, "gives punters the opportunity to bet before odds are adjusted, and provides bookies with a chance to change their market as soon as possible." Dobson "was the first person in Australia to be charged with a 'court-siding' offence under Victoria's new sports integrity laws." His employer, Surrey-based Sporting Data Ltd., "has denied their system is illegal, arguing Victoria's new laws have been applied 'inappropriately'" in Dobson's case (THE AGE, 1/23).
