Copa Libertadores Participants To Take Home 95% Of Tourney's Broadcast Revenue

The clubs that participate in the next edition of the Copa Libertadores, which will begin at the end of January, "will receive 95% of the revenue from TV broadcast rights," according to Dino Cappelli of MARCA. South American football governing body CONMEBOL "confirmed this on its official website, explaining that the intention is to give more money to the clubs that participate." This "is not coming at random, but instead as several continental organizations are presenting complaints against CONMEBOL demanding more revenue for participation." The increase will "not only benefit participants in the Copa Libertadores." CONMEBOL is intending to "also increase revenue for clubs involved in the Copa Sudamericana and for the next Copa América, which will take place in Chile in '15" (MARCA, 1/4). CONMEBOL Treasurer and Bolivian Football Federation President Carlos Chávez said, "We analyzed a series of proposals with the idea that clubs receive more money and do so from the first phase. The South American leaders gave the go ahead and it will be from the year that is about to begin. It is a significant increase that started running last year." For the Libertadores, the clubs that play the first phase will each receive $250,000, and those that get eliminated in that round will receive $50,000 more. In '13, the clubs that participated in the second phase and the group phase were awarded $600,000 each; in '14 it will be $900,000 (CONMEBOL).
