1964 Tokyo Olympic Cauldron To Be Preserved, Displayed At New Stadium

A new national stadium to be constructed for the 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics "will house the Olympic cauldron which was used for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics," according to Maan Pamintuan of the JAPAN DAILY PRESS. A plate bearing the names of Gold Medalists at the Games "will also be kept there." The decision came when the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry "responded to clamors of preserving the cauldron as a heritage and reminder of the 1964 Games." The cauldron is currently enshrined at the National Stadium, "which will soon be replaced by a new state-of-the-art facility designed by award-winning architect Zaha Hadid." The ministry "is considering lending the cauldron to other cities while the construction of the 80,000-seater stadium is ongoing," until it is finished by '19 (JAPAN DAILY PRESS, 12/30).
