Football Notes: Football Official, Nine Players From Eritrea Disappear In Kenya

A senior football official said that nine members of the Eritrean national football team and the coach of the squad "have disappeared in Kenya, bringing the number of those to abscond while playing in a regional tournament to 11." Council for East and Central Africa FAs Secretary General Nicholas Musonye said, "The players and the coach have absconded after the team was knocked out of the regional tournaments which ended last weekend" (REUTERS, 12/16). ... A spokesperson for the Rosario, Argentina police department said that two football fans -- supporters of Argentine first division side Newell's -- were murdered and two more were injured on Sunday "when the vehicle they were riding in was shot" by a fan wearing a shirt of crosstown rival Rosario Central. This year, "at least seven people have died due to violence in Argentine football" (AFP, 12/16).
